Master Blender and Commercial Manager (Toronto or Vancouver, Canada) - (Ref: 1169)

 


Our client is an Ireland based privately owned, highly successful alcohol brand development business.  They develop and market a wide variety of alcohol brands for North America and other global markets.  They are also the largest shareholder in a fast growing craft distiller of gin and whisky.  
The founder and CEO also owns a collection of prestigious wineries and estate vineyards.  In addition, the Company distributes many leading international wine, spirits and beer brands.
Our client is now seeking to create a new role within the business; Master Blender & Commercial Manager for a Canadian whisky brand it intends launching in 2018.  As the job title suggests, the role is multi-functional with the successful candidate expected to be proficient in the commercial aspects of whisky production as well as being able to work with our distillery partners to determine the ultimate finish for their liquids.  He/she will be the face of this brand and will be expected to be comfortable and competent in dealing with both industry public relations and trade/retailer interaction.  The role will be located in Vancouver or Toronto and will require travel throughout the country and beyond in the capacity as the face of the brand.
Key responsibilities:
Work with Canadian Distilleries to select the very best in Canadian whisky to blend
Develop a blending program for the brand, selecting barrels and finishing times to deliver optimum liquid for bottling
Be responsibility for the commercial make-up of the product
Develop a liquid consistency program
Experiment regularly to improve and future-proof our liquids and build out an award-winning range
Develop and maintain close relationships with both consumer and trade journalists in each market. Use media opportunities to build awareness around our unique blending process and key messaging
Conduct tastings at key on & off-premise trade and journalist events
Work with local sales teams to optimise sales development
Deliver key messaging around the blending and flavour programme
Skills, experience and attributes:
In-depth knowledge, with 5-10 years’ experience in whisky distilling, blending and finishing
Proven track record in the development of award winning whiskies from grain to glass
Strong business/commercial ability with a proven understanding of the cost of goods associated with the production of whisky products
Desire to run an exciting whisky project and develop innovations into a viable thriving business
Ability to build sustainable rapport with key contacts within the whisky supply business and to negotiate viable supplier contracts
Excellent inter-personal skills, with a compelling and energetic manner in individual and group situations
Proven ability in leading and motivating people to achieve individual, team and project goals
Champion of new ideas and initiatives; ability to identify new business opportunities and make them a reality
Strong spirits background, professional experience in grain to glass production; distilling, blending and finishing
Proven commercial ability
