Brewing Operations Director (North East, UK) - (Ref: 1180)


Our client is a well-established pub and brewery firm who has been present since the 19th century and has extensively been growing its brands, contract brewing and managed pubs. 

They are now looking to recruit a Brewing Operations Director who will have overall responsibility for Brewing and Packaging Operations, including Planning, Distribution, Engineering, Quality Management and Warehousing. He/she will report to the CEO and meet the sales plan requirements in volume and quality within the planned resources of finance, manpower and equipment. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for strategic brewery production planning to meet the needs of the long term brewing strategy i.e. in terms of plant, equipment and people
  • Continually review and improve all areas of operational performance, identifying and suggesting areas for improvement
  • Lead and develop a continuous improvement culture within the operations team focussed on achieving World Class manufacturing
  • Manage all resources including manpower, raw materials and, engineering services
  • Be responsible for revenue and capital spends budget
  • Develop daily, weekly and monthly KPI reporting systems to improve operational performance
  • Direct and manage the brewery to supply the required production volumes of bulk and packaged product to the correct quality specification
  • Develop and manage an effective planned preventative maintenance system (in conjunction with the Engineering Manager)
  • Liaise closely with all members of the management team to ensure that both the internal and external customer requirements are satisfied
  • Where necessary, liaise directly with customers and suppliers to ensure that, for example, specifications for contract brewing or new products are wholly satisfied on time and in full
  • Negotiate and manage contract including quality, planning and commercial aspects
  • Have responsibility for the Health, Safety and Welfare of persons directly under their remit
  • Ensure all operations are run according to current environmental and other legislation
  • Liaise closely with the Engineering Manager and agree to submit for approval the required resources in terms of revenue and capital
  • Work on NPD alongside sales, marketing and contract customers
  • Manage collective working agreements through the works Forum / union
  • Represent the Company at IBD functions and other industry events
  • Attend ad hoc “meet the brewer” evenings within the managed estate
  • Provide 24 hour cover for brewery emergencies 

Skills, experience and attributes:

  • Master Brewing / relevant Science Degree
  • Member of the Institute of Brewing
  • NEBOSH / IOSH Health and Safety Qualification
  • A few years’ experience in a similar senior management environment
  • Proven management of multiple projects, products and customers
  • Used to operating and leading within a continuous improvement environment
  • Used to working within a large scale production environment (brewery output c1m HL)
  • Able to manage contractual commercial arrangements with third party customers and suppliers
  • Proven track record of delivering right first time, OTIF
  • Effective team management through strong interpersonal skills
  • Personable, engaging and highly self-motivated
  • Flexibility required for extended hours, bank holidays and covering call-outs
  • Ability to think outside current working and approaches
  • Ability to lead and solve problems under pressure
  • Excellent presentation & IT skills
  • Strong leadership and negotiating skills with the ability to delegate
  • Knowledge of statutory legislation for health, safety and quality
