Head Brewer (Devon, UK) - (Ref: 1307)

 

Utopian Brewing is a new brewery based in Devon, founded by seasoned entrepreneurs with large company and start up experience in a range of industries including pubs, bars and breweries. Having recently successfully overfunded their equity raise on Crowdcube, the company is now looking to recruit a Head Brewer to join the team, to assist in the commissioning of the brew house and take ownership of the development and ongoing management of all aspects of brewing operations. 

The company intend to bring a fresh approach to the craft brewery scene by introducing a range of interesting and original craft lagers made entirely from British grown ingredients, giving people a genuine alternative to the international mega brands.  The company is ambitious and has invested in a 3 vessel / 35 hectolitre brew house to support its plans to rapidly scale output, across draught and packaged ranges, in both the on-trade and retail sectors. 

Alongside the primary desire to produce great beers, the founders are also passionate about sustainability, planning to install a range of sustainable energy sources with an ambition to make the brewery the most energy efficient facility in its class. 

The chosen Head Brewer will need to be a confident and forward thinking individual who will report to, and work closely with, the founding MD and play a major part in delivering the Brewery’s strategy.  

Key responsibilities:

  • Plan and manage the smooth operation of all aspects of beer production
  • Recruit, lead and develop a brewing and packaging team
  • Be a face of the brewery and support sales and marketing functions in promoting the beer, the brand and the brewery
  • Work closely with Sales and Marketing to ensure beers are brewed and packaged in line with customer requirements
  • Take personal ownership for the standards of work delivered and beer produced
  • Develop and monitor Packaging, Fermentation, QC and other Brewhouse Standard Operating Procedures
  • Play a key leadership role working closely with senior management on the development of new brands and recipes
  • Develop and build supplier relationships to ensure raw materials are always available at the right price, and of the right quality
  • Manage H&S and hygiene in the brewery
  • Develop and implement a plan to attain and maintain relevant accreditations (e.g. SALSA)  using own facilities and external labs where appropriate
  • Take ownership of yields, costs and efficiency in the brewhouse
  • Make recommendations for capital projects to improve brewery production and/or beer quality
  • Set and monitor KPI’s
  • Be responsible for procurement and stock management 

Skills, experience and attributes:

  • Hands on self-starter with ambition and passion for their work
  • Brewing qualifications and/or previous relevant brewing experience
  • Proven aptitude to build, lead and motivate a team
  • Desire to work as a key member of the leadership team and contribute to its growth plans
  • Strong communication skills and a highly positive attitude
  • Numerate, financially astute with a keen eye for detail
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to safe working practices
