Head Brewer (South West, UK) - (Ref: 1314)


Our client, a craft brewery based in the South West, are looking to recruit a Head Brewer. He/she will be responsible for leading beer brewing and packaging operations as well as quality control to meet with process and beer production goals and produce high quality and consistent beer. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Oversee the supply of brewhouse materials, package goods and other materials. Managing inventory of above to keep up with production, balancing cost and cash flow considerations
  • Create and maintain a method of continuous process improvement of brewery operations with regards to efficiency, cost reduction and quality
  • Establish key metrics then develop and implement plans to meet production targets
  • Standardise and sustain brewery procedures and protocols
  • Maintain a safe working environment by keeping facilities and equipment in good condition and ensuring adherence to safe working practices
  • Assess equipment purchases and major expenditures to maximise benefit and oversee design operation and improvement of production systems
  • Oversee the quality program and practices.
  • Develop and review quality reports and analysis to ensure consistent, quality beer.
  • Ensure compliance standards are consistently met and exceeded
  • Oversee and attend all tasting panels
  • Teach, train and grow the brewing team to be efficient, educated well-rounded brewers
  • Manage the team, including staffing decisions, disciplinary actions, performance management, training and safety
  • Ensure team members have the correct knowledge, tools and equipment required to do their jobs effectively and safely
  • Develop and manage a progressive training programme for each team member to meet their goals
  • Maintain constant communication of goals and objectives to the team to ensure success
  • Attend and support the team in being able to attend company events when required, representing the company with professionalism, knowledge and passion 

Skills, experience and attributes:

  • A formal brewing education or professional brewing experience is considered above all else
  • Full understanding of brewing science, brewhouse, cellar operations and packaging
  • Solid/proven knowledge of the craft beer and brewing industry
  • Ability to experiment and create new beers with support of management
  • Past brewery installation experience useful
  • A strong understanding of process controls. Troubleshooting and process improvement will be a constant demand
  • Excellent leadership skills with the proven ability to lead and motivate a team and maintain a positive morale in the workforce
  • Professional communication skills both verbal and written
  • Exceptional analytical, decision making and problem solving skills
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • A strong work ethic and the ability to multi-task, prioritise, adapt to changing situations and stay focused on objectives
  • An understanding of Laboratory Operations / Quality Control procedures
  • Extensive knowledge of industry compliance standards: including safety standards, Government regulatory programs, HACCP, and production management systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Access
  • Physical fitness and the ability to occasionally lift up to 25kg and manoeuvre 60kg
  • Proper handling of hazardous materials and operation of complex moving machinery
