Head of Brewing Operations (South West, UK) - (Ref: 1323)



Our client started brewing over 160 years ago and has become one of the oldest and most successful business in the South West with management of over 170 pubs. To date they have remained 100% independent and family owned. Over the years, they have won many Company, Pub and Beer Awards.

They are now looking for an Operations Manager / Head Brewer to be based at one of their new major brewery site in the South West. The Operations Manager / Head Brewer will report into the Brewing Director and will be accountable for 4 direct reports and a team of 25 people. They will deliver leadership, mentoring and coaching skills support the brewing & packaging team through the journey of commissioning the new brewery.  They will establish and embed best operational practice within the brewing, bottling and maintenance teams at the brewery in order to deliver measurable excellence and operating standards in the production of safe, high quality products to meet customer needs. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the transfer of operations from the existing brewing and packaging sites into the newly built brewery by offering strong leadership, planning, structure, direction and review
  • Work with the brewing, packaging and engineering teams as well as supply partners to effectively commission the new brewery ensuring that all processes are established aligned with recognised best practice
  • Embed a culture amongst the production teams aligned with the Brewery Company values and Brewing and Brand values
  • Mentor, support, motivate and train the brewery production teams such that they embrace change and their own personal development.  Establish individual training plans for each member of the team such they can realise their full potential and conduct their duties in a proficient manner in line with the quality and service expectations of the business and our customers
  • Establish performance management system for all departments and track and communicate quality, efficiency and financial KPIs against defined targets. Work with teams to establish and deliver improvement plans to further develop performance and efficiency
  • Develop and embed ‘continuous improvement’ within the culture of the team at the brewery utilising recognised management tools based on LEAN manufacturing principles
  • Support the production planning and materials management process ensuring that materials, plant and equipment are resourced efficiently and available as required to ensure delivery of finished product the right package, in the right quantity and at the right time. Specifically, support, advise and engage with the development and implementation of the new Company ERP system that is to be established across all Brewery sites
  • Support the Technical Brewer to develop and embed processes and procedures enabling the production of product that is consistent and safe for consumers in a manner that meets and exceeds compliance expectations of customers and regulatory bodies.  Establish due diligence and compliance with recognised Quality Management standards and regulatory expectations of the Health & Safety Executive, HM, Revenue & Customs, Environment Agency and others
  • Work with the Senior Engineer to establish a program of condition monitoring and preventive maintenance of the brewery plant, equipment and facilities to ensure that facilities are available for production at the required time in a condition that will enable the delivery of defined efficiency and output targets with minimum downtime arising from mechanical or electrical failures
  • Act as the responsible person on site, being the first point of contact for external enquiries from customers, authorities and members of the general public. Oversee the operation of the brewery shop and hospitality bar (acting as designated license holder) and ensure the brewery production, office, storage and staff amenity areas remain clean and tidy to meet minimum hygiene standards within a food production environment, and to promote a positive image of the Company and its operating standards to visitors 

Skills, experience and attributes:

  • An established industry professional with a proven track record managing people and operations within medium to large enterprises in the brewing, beverage or food sector
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and application of management tools designed to deliver continuous improvement in the manufacturing environment
  • A genuine ‘people’ person who seeks reward from developing, mentoring and empowering others to achieve their personal and business goals
  • Determination and tenacity to deliver positive outcomes and improvement through teamwork and collaboration
  • A background in brewing and packaging is preferred, and possession of a recognised brewing qualification would be advantageous
