Microbiologist (North West, UK) - (Ref: 1183)

 

Our client, based in the North West, is a highly successful brewing and packaging operation.  They manufacture and package premium brands for international customers. They are now looking to recruit a site Microbiologist to ensure the effective running of the microbiological QC function, ensuring that all products produced comply with the correct microbiological specification, whilst utilising the most efficient and cost effective methods and adhering to all relevant quality, legal and food safety requirements. The Microbiologist will report to the Quality Manager.

Key responsibilities:     

  • Manage the microbiological analysis of intermediate and packaged products
  • Ensure that all samples taken from production lines for microbiological analysis are correct, meet all customer and internal requirements and are recorded correctly
  • Manage the microbiological analysis of all water sources on site and raw materials
  • Carry out investigative work to identify root cause of any microbiological failures
  • Maintain and update standard methods of microbiological analysis
  • Investigate microbiological complaints
  • Ensure site practices comply with good hygiene standards
  • Be a member of the site HACCP Team
  • Assist in product sampling, testing and carry out investigative work across 2 sites as and when required
  • Generate weekly or monthly reports outlining site microbiological performance
  • Maintain adequate stocks of media, disposables and chemicals for efficient running of microbiology lab
  • Recommend, support and introduce improvement initiatives, providing training where necessary to improve departmental, team and individual performance and initiatives
  • Ensure all documentation and record systems are maintained to high standards on a daily basis in accordance with all internal and external quality standards
  • Maintain a high degree of product and personal safety in accordance with HMC&E, HSE, EHO and COSHH requirements, ensuring adherence to all legislative requirements and by the implementation and auditing of risk assessments controls and HACCP

Skills, experience and attributes:

  • BSc in Applied Biology or equivalent
  • Experience of working as a microbiologist in the brewing industry or soft drinks manufacturing
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • HACCP and Advance Food Hygiene trained
  • Internal systems auditing experience
