Packaging Manager (London, UK) - (Ref: 1203)


Our client, a brewery based in London, is known for producing a great range of high-quality, flavourful, interesting beers and is the fastest growing craft brewery in the country.  With their commitment to continued investment in the best equipment available, it is an ideal time to join the company.  

They are now looking to recruit a Packaging Manager who will manage all areas of packaging, keg, bottle, can and keykeg, working with the Supply Chain Manager, Head Brewer and Head of Quality to deliver in spec beer into the right packaging format ensuring the brewery does not go out of stock.  They must show continual drive to improve the operation and procedure of the packaging lines with focus on engineering improvements, quality improvements and team performance improvement.  The successful candidate will manage a team of 10 people to deliver the company and departmental KPI’s.  They will operate the packaging lines in accordance with Food safety procedures, Quality charter, Production Strategy and Health and Safety Policy. The Packaging Manager will report to the Production Director.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage the control, output and cost effective running of the packaging lines
  • Produce regular reports to support company and departmental KPI’s, monitoring activity and showing improvement
  • Drive forward the improvement of beer quality in the packaging department through best in class process, procedures and training
  • Work with suppliers and functional leads to ensure that the packaging materials brought on site are the best quality for operational purposes and delivery against quality for the consumer
  • Work with engineering function and procurement team in purchasing of new and replacement equipment for packaging lines
  • Ensure the quality of packaged goods meet the commercial standards set out by Head of QA/Marketing Director
  • Ensure the output of the packaging line is in consistent with weekly planning and in accordance with the pack program
  • Ensure that there is an agreed level of stock in the warehouse to ensure no out of stock situation arise
  • Attend weekly planning meetings to ensure packaging lines produce the right volume of product
  • Be responsible for the procurement and management of stock holdings required for packaging
  • Ensure all packaging areas are well maintained and cleaned to the highest hygienic standards possible
  • Manage the packaging operators liaising with HR to resolve issues, maintain up to date records
  • Motivate the packaging team to ensure the needs of the company and personal development needs of the team are met
  • Train packaging staff in process and procedures
  • Control input particularly man hours and contract/temporary staff
  • Maintain all records and procedures relating to packaging line operations and maintenance for QA purposes
  • Work with marketing team for NPD of packaging formats
  • Ensure packaging complies with relevant food legislation, H & S, fire and security at all times 

Skills, experience and attributes:

  • Relevant degree in brewing, engineering and or packaging
  • HACCP trained
  • Extensive prior experience in managing a packaging line
  • Knowledge and passion for Modern Craft beer
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Problem solving and ability to diagnose problems
  • Ability to work with in and promote great team work
  • Good commercial awareness and negotiating skills
  • Flexible: hours of work typically 8 – 5, some night work and shift work will be required including occasional weekend work.
